Questions

Frequently asked questions

Does a lease in Guatemala have to be notarized?

It can be a private document. Notarizing the signatures certifies who signed and avoids later disputes about authenticity.

When must a lease be registered?

Registration is mandatory when the lease is for more than three years or when rent is prepaid for more than one year. In that case the lease is made in a public deed.

Is the lease in Spanish?

Yes, the official document is in Spanish. We explain every clause in English, and a translation can be prepared if you need one.

How do I protect my deposit?

With a photo inventory of the property's initial condition, signed by both parties and attached to the lease.

Can I rent out my property while living abroad?

Yes. Someone you trust can sign for you with a power of attorney.
